World Language: Putting Grammar in its place in language learning, teaching and Assessment
Date: Tuesday, November 8, 2016 Location: Norton Middle School 215 W. Main Street, Norton MA 02766 Time: 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Presenters: Nicole Sherf, Secondary Education coordinator, Dept of World Languages and Cultures, Salem State University Tiesa Graf, Dept Chair, Teacher Leader, Spanish TEacher, South Hadley Public Schools co-authors of "Evidence of Student Learning: A Starting Point for Collecting and Analyzing Data Related to Communication" Best For: A Seminar for World Language Educators Description: The proficiency movement is changing the focus of language programs across the nation. Proficiency is all about what language learners can do with the language in various contexts. The paradigm shift that this represents encourages language teachers and programs to plan for proficiency outcomes rather than being guided by the grammatical concepts in the textbook. It also requires a new lens for assessment. This two-day workshop will overview the new role of grammar in teaching and assessment, and provide strategies to involve students in their developing proficiency.
